Data compiled by CDC contains records of unplanned K-12 school and school district closures in the United States caused by influenza and or influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and COVID-19 between August 1, 2011-June 30, 2022. Each record shows a school closure event and includes event type, state, district name, school name, closure type (individual or district wide), date of closure, reason for closure, epidemiological week, and reopening date. The CDC collected data through daily searches of public online sources such as google alerts, google news, school and district websites, and state education and health department websites. Closure events were reviewed and matched to National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) school and district identification numbers when possible. All 50 states and District of Columbia was covered. Last updated May 17,2024 and dataset metadata indicates updates were completed through May 2024.
